Digital Compass in Next iPhone Confirmed!

The Boy Genius Report has recently found new evidence of a digital compass (magnetometer) in the new iPhone 3.0 software debugging menus. The first evidence of the magnetometer were reported in April and this seems to confirm magnetometer support for the next generation iPhone which is expected to be coming sometime this summer. The new magnetometer could bring a wide range of new possibilities for the iPhone GPS and the Maps application.

Examples of how the digital compass could be used include pointing the iPhone's camera to a building and the iPhone telling you what building it is with the combined information of the GPS, accelerometer and magnetometer. It could possibly even overlay graphics and images with text on top to provide additonal information. Another possibility could be pointing the iPhone to the sky which would then show you information about stars and constellations.
