TechCrunch reports that during Google's I/O, Google revealed their new app for the iPhone, Latitude. This app allows users to keep track of where their friends are via GPS and other location-based-services. To many's surprise, this applications will not be a native app submitted to the App Store but it is a Web App which will be run in Safari. Latitude ill be coming soon to the iPhone with the launch of the iPhone 3.0 firmware.

The reason why Google has chosen to develop this app as a Web App is because of the following:

Thanks to HTML 5, Safari will be able to access a user’s location information and Latitude will be able to access that as well (provided the user gives permission).
